A Special Career Mentoring Session

At the beginning of the school year, Gable 8th grader, GT Turner, indicated on a student interest inventory that he was very interested in working for NASCAR. To help him map out his career plan, local businessman, Shane Martin, was invited to meet with GT to discuss his possible career path and future goals. Mr. Martin attended Clemson University where he received bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering. He is currently a business owner and works as an engineer, specializing in Aerodynamic Testing and Program Management for Chevrolet. He works very closely with various NASCAR teams and drivers.

Mr. Martin spoke with GT about the importance of his math classes, possible dual enrollment opportunities, and the importance of a hands-on internship to gain the skills he will need for his dream job. He shared with GT exactly what he does “behind the scenes” to prepare the NASCAR vehicles and drivers for race day. Mr. Martin also surprised GT with a few autographed items from his favorite driver, Kyle Lawrence. This was a productive career mentoring session for GT to help him start thinking about his educational and career goals.
