The 6th grade Science team of Carlene Carlson, Amy Ford and Deanna Jenkins used project-based learning to help their students discover in-depth information about animals. The final project was for students to create their own animal book or digital presentation. The students’ books or presentations were geared towards elementary students. Using information and word choice, they were to create a clear representation of their animal that younger students would be able to comprehend. The paperback book or electronic presentation required the students to collect factual data about their animal and then use this research to compose a children’s story. Students were able to submit their book into a contest to read and share their writings with students at Roebuck Elementary. From all the books submitted, a panel of judges chose thirty-two students. The students who attended the field trip were able to go into one of the second grade classrooms to read to small groups. Within each classroom, the sixth grade student was able to read their book, answer questions and interact with the second graders. The second grade students had many questions since they had also completed their own animal research not long ago. Overall, the students did an outstanding job and the teachers were pleased with how each sixth grader embraced the role of the educator. We were very thankful for Mr. Talley allowing us to attend and Mrs. Jennifer Faulkner, Mrs. Katrina and Second Grade Teachers for allowing us into their school and classrooms! We look forward to more adventures!
